Moalboal August 2001, #18

Hello People!!

Chicago and I made it back to good old Moalboal last week. We had a
great vacation in Sweden. Chicago liked the food, sill (pickled
herring), moose, surströmming, knäckebröd and so on. The only thing
she didn't like was the cold weather and blodpudding (blood pudding)
with lingonberry jam. We flew via Thailand on the way back. I was
surprised to see Khao San road (THE place for backpackers) packed
with foreigners. Why are there so many in Thailand and hardly anyone
in Moalboal? I don't know.
They have made the concrete road longer. It now stretches all the way
from Moalboal to the cock-fighting pit. If they add another 8-900
meters, the road should stretch all the way to the beach. That is
unfortunately not the case with the road to Cebu. They tore it up,
but some contracts states that they have one year to finish. So way
do it today when you can do it tomorrow :(

WEATHER:
We have had strong winds and high waves the last few days. There was
a typhoon east of Luzon and a low pressure west of the same island
and this affects Philippines all the way down to Mindanao. No boats
have sunk (accept for Jean Lucas small sail boat, but we are used to
that). Many of the dive shops took their divers by bus to wreck point
were it was calm.

ACTIVITIES:
Jesper sent this:

good safari before the rainy season will start. 5 days diving, 3 boat

BIRTHS, SOCIAL AND GOSSIP:
The first night we got here we met Dolores (old owner of Dolores beer
corner) so now I know all the gossip, hahaha.
Mark and Ai-Ai got married in June, I was unfortunately gone then.
But I heard it was a great party at Nelsons house. Their son Marius
just got born. A healthy little guy that looks just like his father.
Nelson has added another boat, Whirlwind, to his fleet of dive boats.
They are now building a small pool bar across from Roxys, let us all
pray that they will not have karaoke there.
Mike, Minang and Emily are moving back to the beach. If I know Mike
right, he probably have plans for a brave new "hot shot cafe'" again.
Emily is planning to continue her education via internet.
We are also expecting to see a few new mestizos here on the beach.
Jean Luca and Jilyn, German Herman and Bibi, Swiss Ferdinand and his
wife are all expecting to produce something in the near future. It's
like: the second you go on vacation everybody gets pregnant.
Roxy has opened for the season. Kasadya dive shop has closed
permanently. In the latest (June 2001) Japanese guide book over dive
spots in southern Philippines only three Moalboal restaurants are
mentioned: Deep water bar (closed permanently), Sea side (closed) and
Italian corner.............That should confuse the Japanese.

ACCORDING TO NELSON (our inside man into politics here):
Any kidnapping, like the ones we have read about in the past is not
likely here in Moalboal. With naval stations at both ends of the
straight , Dumaguete and Toledo. It would not be possible to escape
by boat. There is no muslim support here in Cebu so an overland thing
would not work.

GENERAL:

If anyone has any information that they think would be interesting
for people on this list, please do let me know and I will add it in.

OK here comes a joke that's fit to print:
On hearing that her elderly grandfather had passed away, Jenny rushed
to her grandmother's side. When she asked the particulars of her
grandfather's death, her grandmother explained,
"He had a heart attack during sex on Sunday morning."
Horrified, Jenny suggested sex at age 94 was surely asking for
trouble.
"Oh, no," her grandmother replied, "We had sex every Sunday morning,
in time with the church bells - in with the dings and out with the
dongs."
She paused and wiped away a tear. "If it hadn't been for that damn
ice cream truck going past, he'd still be alive."
